NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- The federal government is going to pay for the over-the-counter (OTC) generic versions of Nexium, AstraZeneca's blockbuster acid blocker, a drug that treats heartburn, acid reflux, and acid-related heart disease.
The federal government spent $50 million on OTC generic versions of the drug from 2007 to 2014, according to a new government study, and it also spent more than $1 billion on prescription medicines.
"We're just not ready for the hype," said David Goldfarb, deputy head of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, in a news release. "The cost of prescription medicines is an absolute issue."
AstraZeneca and other drugmakers spent about $20 million in 2014 on generic drugs, which they said were not covered by federal health insurance.
It was the first generic drug-drug merger in history. AstraZeneca, with a $2.3 billion share in the U. S. market, acquired Eli Lilly and Company in 2014.
The drugmaker said in its announcement on Friday that it will "ensure that generic drug manufacturers and wholesalers continue to maintain their compliance and market standards of patient care."
The companies said they will "continue to follow the law" and provide OTC prescription medications to patients who have health insurance, but will only be allowed to use OTC prescription medications when they have a valid prescription.
